jschoubben bfb271a91b Take done keys in from a durable pull consumer, a batch at a time (issue 1945, ADR 0544)
The take-in watched the builder's and the indexer's buckets, started a follower
per module that retried on a 30 s timer, and at start took every catalogued
module in alphabetically: on 2026-10-25 a restart took in about 2 modules a
minute, about 190 followers queued behind 16 slots, and every take-in composed
two or three times even with nothing new, so a new build waited 30 minutes and
more for its credential.

Now two durable consumers named mesh-controller-take-in read the indexer's
modules bucket (every module's last trunk value when the consumer is made, then
each write) and the builder's builds bucket (each write), at most 16 keys
unacknowledged each. The bus keeps what is not taken in: the start's look is the
consumers' own catch-up, and a restart costs only what was left unacknowledged.
A batch reads the catalogue once, takes each module in once, and asks the
composer twice: once for its modules' nodes, once for the bus's node with the
grants. A module registered at its trunk whose compositions and grant exist, or
that this process took in at the same trunk, composes nothing; a key delivered
again is taken in whole. A wait for the builder's or indexer's next write is
acknowledged, a wait on a read or a failure refused with a 30 s delay. The
backlog is in status, and a backlog standing still for 5 minutes raises
take-in-stalled. The controller's account is granted the two consumers' acks.

The follower tests go with the followers: twelve tests become three.
Research 072: the take-ins on a bounded pull consumer (milestone 4, done keys
alone) and the start's look composing only what changed (milestone 2).

jschoubben e419d0182f Delete the builder, the build asks, the build queue and the merge gate: the builder's keys are the only way a module is built (issues 1851, 1299, 1318; C2b-C5, C10)
The controller asks no build of anybody (ADR 0501 §5, ADR 0525 clause 6, ADR 0503 §3). Every module of a walk is taken from the
builder's done key; a key not done yet waits, named in the plan, and never fails it.

- C2b/C2c: internal/builder and cmd/mesh-controller's asks go (askABuild, onlyTheBuildersOwn, buildOneAsked, takeIn from an
outcome, buildAgentsOwn, the builder's say and its fallback, the daemon hearing an outcome). The server follows the retired
seats' built subjects only to let go of them, because the installer's carried user list names them.
- C2d: replay, queue, cancel, clear, kill, pause, resume, delivery-check, check-here and merge-gate are refused by name.
- C3: the check queues (CHECKS_READY, CHECKS_OTHER) and their workers, the checks-running and plans-building buckets and
their grants, the build queue and its hold (plans_building.go, queue.go, link/holds.go, builds_nats.go, checks_nats.go).
- C4: merge_gate*.go, the pull request's repo-check path, the Checked event and its layers; a pull request asks the
controller nothing but to tell mesh-config what its head declares.
- C5: the builds bucket is written only by key_takein.
- C10 (help and refusals): the terminal's help lists only what is served.

Integration tests of the plan's tiers, sends, stops and retries now run on a stand-in builder with a done key for every
module (walk_keys_scaffold_integration_test.go); the tests of the asks, the queue, the merge gate and the replays are deleted.

The send record of issue 234 is now readable only through the controller's
verbs (issue 506), and only plan said it. status says per machine when it was
last sent a declaration, by whom, from which generation and what it answered;
node show says it in full with the refusal's words. A machine's answer is read
from its report only when that report is about the send and came after it.

jschoubben a330c564ba Say a module assigned and left out of its machine's composition as a condition (issue 380)

mesh/repo-check pass: its merge-check.sh passed
mesh/delivery superseded: a newer head of the same pull request
A push leaves out a module whose settings do not compose and sends the rest,
which is right, but only plan said so: nfs-server ran nowhere for days while
the operator believed it ran. The self-check now raises needs-operator for a
setting nobody gave, naming the setting and the command, and left-out for any
other cause; both warnings, cleared once the module composes or is unassigned.
status and node show list the same modules as assigned, not applied.

jochen 7d63d2e68c Say why assign finds no module, and keep an assignment pending on its build
A merge asks for a new module's build, and assign answered "no module of that
name" until the build registered it, which read as a module nobody registered
(hq issue 325). Keep every build request, tell a build in flight, a module
known and not built, and an unknown name apart, and make an assignment made
while the build runs when the build registers the module.

mesh/repo-check pass: its merge-check.sh passed
mesh/delivery delivered
mesh/delivery-group group fix/314-a-large-answer-is-paged-not-lost merged: every member is merged
The client library refuses to send a reply over the bus's max_payload, and the
controller only logged it: conditions and status answered nobody for hours on
2026-10-08 while calls said each was answered in 130 ms, and the operator's
channel read nothing. An answer too large is now held under its call and paged
to the caller that asks, on the same subject; a caller that does not page is
told in words, and calls says it. The overviews no longer carry every finding:
conditions and status list each condition with its newest evidence, doctor at
most twenty findings a probe (probe= gives one whole), and the JSON overviews
are sent once, as data, instead of twice.

jochen 875a4e5758 Count a plan's time from its tier, and save it only when a step changed it (hq issue 296)
plans said a build queued for minutes had been building for a few seconds: the line counted from
the last save, and every advance saved the plan whether or not it moved, bumping its revision and
saying plan-moved on the bus. The line, status and LATE now count from when the plan entered its
tier with the stalled condition's bound, and an advance that changes nothing writes nothing.

jochen 751e39186c Heal what is known, under a brake, and say every repair (hq to-be 45 Phase 3)
Research 031 counted the repairs people made by hand: a push to unstick a
plan waiting on a report, a controller restarted to make an object again, a
plan closed, a consumer re-made from now. Each was the ordinary path taken
again by someone who noticed. The healer registry makes each a registered
response to one condition kind, with a budget, a settle and its event:

- H1 sent-not-reported: ask the machine's node-engine to report again
(mesh.node.<n>.ask.report); if it does not report what it was sent, send
it again, never moving a build a policy or a plan holds back
- H2 stalled: close a plan whose wait is superseded or finished
- H3 holder-silent / consumer-lost: the send's own assertion of the bus's
  objects (issue 208's note)
- H4 consumer-behind: consumer-reset, only for a consumer the stream table
marks resettable (the controller's own events consumer)
- H5 is the identity provider's own repair (ADR 0224 §5), registered only

Success is the observation clearing the condition, never the healer; a spent
budget hands the condition to the operator, urgent, with what was tried, and
no healer touches it again. Every act is begun in the store before it is made
(migration 0070), kept in the condition's tried as "healer Hn" and said as
the seat event healer-acted; a heal is never a hand act. More than twelve acts
in an hour stop every healer until an hour after the last, said urgently.
Only the lease holder heals.

S15 is live: a cause repaired by hand twice in a fortnight raises
healer-wanted, naming the healer that was not enough where one exists. D6's
far-behind finding has its own kind, consumer-behind. Nodes are granted the
question; the controller's grant gains healer-acted (genesis lock in
mesh-host). `healers` lists the registry, the acts and the brake; status
counts the week's heals.

jochen bb1607e424 Say when the mesh is wrong: conditions, watchdogs, the bus's advisories, doctor (hq to-be 45 Phase 1)
Every one of the 48 core failures of research 031 was found by a person
looking; the mesh's answers carried the fact for whoever asked and told
nobody.

- The condition store (to-be 45 §2): mesh-controller_conditions, one key
per open condition, written by compare-and-set so a person's silence
and the watchdogs never lose each other's word; every transition kept
ninety days in mesh-controller_condition-history and said as the
  seat's events condition-raised / condition-changed / condition-cleared
(the condition at the top level, with event, at, change, why, show),
offered again while the bus is away. Raised and cleared by observation
only; a clearing reopened within ten minutes is the same condition with
its count up, its silence kept. Verbs: conditions, conditions show,
conditions silence (a hand act, at most a week), conditions history.
- ADR 0224's provider standing is the first kind, provider-failing, held
by the provider's events; the provider_standing table is no longer read
or written (left in place: dropping it is the operator's word).
- status leads with the open conditions, urgent first, and says all well
only with none open; conditions it cannot read are said and not well.
- The signals table compiled in, one watchdog loop over it every 30s: S1
heartbeat (3 intervals, asleep machines excepted, control node urgent
after 30 min), S2 report after a send, S3 plan tier, S4 event loop deaf,
S5 merge not acted, S6 ask lost, S7 call hung, S8 provider silent, S9
advisories, S10 self-check silent, S11 node tools silent, S13 stale
refusals; S12, S14, S15 deferred with their reasons. A row that cannot
see raises probe-failed and clears nothing. A test generated from the
table suppresses each signal inside and past its bound.
- The bus's advisories (maximum deliveries, a mesh consumer deleted) and
the controller's own slow consumer and refused subjects, said in the
  mesh's words.
- doctor: the probe registry D1-D10 (D5 deferred) and DW, every five
minutes, each in thirty seconds; a probe that cannot run is never a
pass. D1 validates with mesh-host's own validator. Every run ends with
the doctor-heartbeat event mesh-watcher listens for.
- The controller is granted its new buckets, events, the two advisories
and $SRV.INFO; the node tools their tools-alive heartbeat. The streams
and consumers the controller asserts and the ones D6/D7 expect are one
  derivation.

jochen e74c32ed50 Keep calls and hand acts on the bus, answer status at once, record durations (hq to-be 45 Phase 0)
A controller restart lost every call's outcome, `status` composed the mesh
while its caller waited (18.6s live on 2026-10-06, past the 10s window), a
repair by hand left no trace, and the core's bounds had nothing measured to
be set from.

- calls: kept in the controller's bucket mesh-controller_calls (last 1000 or
14 days, answers bounded to 64 KiB), read by id across a restart; a
controller starting marks a stopped one's running calls abandoned; each
call names its caller from the inbox its answer goes to.
- status: the serving controller composes it at start, after news from a
machine, a build or an acting verb, and every minute; the verb answers the
last composition at once with when and how long it took. Composing resolves
each machine once instead of twice.
- hand-act log in mesh-controller_hand-acts: push (required through the seat),
plans stop/close, broker consumer-reset and the new hand-act record take
  --why/--cause/--condition; `hand-acts` lists them and repeated causes;
  status counts the week's.
- durations (migration 0066): apply (send to first report), heartbeat gap,
plan tier and build, recorded as heard; `durations` summarises them.
- the controller's seat row takes this binary's definition of its own verbs,
so the console no longer judges calls against an older build's schema.
- the controller is granted its two buckets' subjects.

jochen 6d620f77c3 Bound a consumer's identity by the provision it requires (hq issue 263)
The one global 20-character bound made every consumer pay an object
store's key length, even for provisions that keep no name, and a single
overflow refused the provider's whole declaration. An offer now states
its own bound (identity: {max, in} or false); unsaid, a provider told its
consumers keeps 20 and one told nothing keeps none. module check judges
every identity on the longest machine name before merge, and a provider
leaves an overflowing consumer out of its grants and composes, with the
consumer named by push, plan and status (ADR 0225).

jochen 8d9d33ae85 Report a provider that keeps failing a consumer in status (hq ADR 0224)
The identity provider failed every consumer for a day and status called the
mesh well (hq issue 179). The controller now follows every provider's
provisioner.failing/recovered, keeps the newest failing word per provider,
machine and consumer (migration 0065), and status, its JSON and node show
name it until it recovers. Every module that receives contributions is
granted the two events, so no manifest can forget them.

jochen 106507b1d3 Show and change the build queue through the controller, and have plans follow it (hq ADR 0219)
Nothing showed what waited for a build machine, and an ask could not be
dropped without leaving the plan that made it waiting for ever. New verbs:
queue, cancel, clear, rebuild, replay, kill, pause, resume, and plans retry.
Every ask a person drops is recorded failed through the same take-in as a
failed build; a plan keeps the id it asked each module under and matches
its outcome by it. replay is a dry run unless registered, and registering
an older commit than one registered since needs --older (hq issue 207).
A plan waiting on a seat paused on every holder says so and is not late;
a failed plan can be retried, and a rebuild joins the plan holding the
module instead of running beside it.

Seed node-package-manager and node-container-runtime. Derive each module's
dependencies from its declared service, package and container resources;
judge them over the node's whole set, exempting the foundation. Refuse at
assign (several modules may go on as one act) and at unassign of the last
holder; report at composition in status, behind one switch.

jschoubben b5df244096 The mesh says what filters a converged machine: filters kept per node, shown by node show, named by status, and previewed with their fates (hq ADR 0168)
A host reports every table and chain that refuses traffic with its owner,
and a converged machine's found firewall's state. The controller keeps both
on the node's record (migration 0054), shows them on node show, names every
converged machine something other than the mesh filters in status — text
and JSON, and such a machine is not well — and the converge preview lists
what filters the machine with the fate of each: retired with the front end,
left as the runtime's, left as a ban, or left in force and not the mesh's.
What was invisible for eleven hours (issues 144, 145) is said by name.

jschoubben a69a832248 A merge produces a tiered plan the mesh keeps (hq ADR 0162)
A module's dependencies are one relation in the catalogue — stands-on, packages, built-by, declared —
answered by one call. A merge takes what moved and everything reachable from it, sorts the set into
tiers (a code dependency in the same tier, a build dependency after its base is built, a runtime
dependency after the build machine is built and running; the build machine's own base comes first,
built by the one that runs), writes the plan to the store, asks the first tier and returns. Every
outcome advances the plan; a ticker advances what outcomes cannot; a controller replaced mid-plan
resumes it. status lists open plans and names one that has waited too long.
2026-10-01 17:53:55 +02:00
jschoubben bfd983e3f8 A held module is in status, and it stops the mesh reading as well
novox/hq 04-ISSUES/125. A module assigned to a machine and never taken
runs none of what it declares. Status had no vocabulary for it: the
machine was heard from, current, and doing what it was told, so the mesh
printed "all doing what they were told" — which was true, and was acted
on, and every public name on the machine went dark.

Status now names each module a machine is holding rather than running,
per machine and with a count, read from what the MACHINE reported rather
than from the mesh's take-time listing — the machine is the only thing
that knows what it found. The JSON form carries the same rows, absent
rather than empty when nothing is held.

And a hold suppresses the all-well sentence, where being adopted does
not: adopted is a mode somebody chose, a module assigned and never taken
is a half-finished action with nothing left to finish it. The condition
is now a named function so the rule lives in one place and a test binds
to the real thing rather than a copy of it.

untakenModules raises a read it cannot make rather than answering "holding
nothing" from a failed query, which is the shape this whole issue is.

jschoubben fcaad7271a A failure that repeats is said to be stuck
The mesh kept one report per machine, replaced, so a resource nothing can ever apply
looked like a failure that had just happened, every reconcile interval, for ever.
The row now keeps when the current failure began and how many reports in a row have
said it — the same outcome, refusal and failed resources; anything different starts
again and a clean apply clears it. Three make the machine stuck, and status says so
beside the failure, in words and in JSON (novox/hq 04-ISSUES/065, ADR 0090).

One name per thing, per the HQ glossary: the module/container/image/binary/repo

foundation (embedded base bundles, default template and example lock renamed with
their go:embed directives). No behaviour change — a pure vocabulary rename.
