Graduates research 018 (playbook 02) and hands the design off (playbook 04). Five records, one design, dated notes in the records and designs they change.

Records (all accepted, decided by the operator on 2026-10-02):

0173 — the operator's machine is the mesh's, and a module is whatever it declares. Extends 0040: no kinds of module, the home has no boundary of its own, one default per module and no flavors, servers and workstations from one catalogue. Records the package-shape gap for packages outside the distribution's repositories.
0174 — a node varies a module through settings and kept regions, never an edit. Extends 0011; the predecessor's merge strategy and env-var theming are rejected by name; issue 168 must close before any environment module declares a setting.
0175 — one tool runtime per node serves every module's tools, on the host side, never in a container. Extends 0150 (and 0047) for tools; the console is this runtime's serving mode, renamed node-tools; root is the module's concern; any node may call any tool. 0047, 0150 and 0152 carry "the mechanism changed" notes.
0176 — the login shell is a node seat held by one shell module, execute(command) is its contract; installed is not holding. 0040's shell example carries a note.
0177 — service gains scope: user; node-service-manager is a mesh seat seeded by the controller, held by systemd, serving the unit verbs in both scopes.

Design 37 — The operator's machine, in-progress, code: [mesh-host, mesh-controller, mesh-tools, mesh-catalog]: the module shapes worked on zsh, the login manager and a window manager; variation; the node tools runtime; the seats decided and the candidates; what the host gains; the build in order (account on every node → runtime → zsh → systemd → login manager and the graphical stack → settings).

Also: to-be 29 keeps ~/.ssh and points at 37; 33 §6 and 34 are amended; the glossary gains node tools, bundle, kept region, installed / holding and retires flavor; the decisions index is regenerated; research 018 is graduated with became:.

Numbering. 0173–0177 are the next free on main. #286 adds 0169–0171, which collide with records already on main (0169, 0170); whichever of these merges second rebases. records.py, index.py, cycle.py pass.

Research 018 graduates: ADRs 0173–0177 and to-be 37, the operator's machine bf39baf104

Every configurable thing on a node is a module, the home included, and a
module is whatever it declares (0173, extending 0040). A node varies a module
only through a setting rendered into the file or a kept region, never an edit
(0174, extending 0011; issue 168 first). One tool runtime per node serves every
module's tools on the host side, never in a container; the console is its
serving mode, renamed node-tools (0175, extending 0150; 0047/0150/0152 carry
dated notes). The login shell is a node seat held by one shell module with
`execute` as its contract (0176). A unit may be user-scoped and the service
manager is a node seat held by systemd (0177).

To-be 37 is handed off in-progress to mesh-host, mesh-controller, mesh-tools
and mesh-catalog, with the build in order: the account on every node, the
runtime, zsh, systemd, then the graphical stack. To-be 29 keeps ~/.ssh and
points at 37; 33 §6 and 34 are amended; the glossary gains node tools, bundle,
kept region, installed/holding, and retires flavor.
