Issue 690: nothing checked that mail flows through mailu end to end. On 2026-10-14 every container read healthy while postfix could not resolve a name: inbound mail was refused with 450 and outbound mail sat in the deferred queue for days.

Change

  • New tool mailu_health (modules/mailu/health.ts, tools/index.ts), the health answer every health tool gives (state, healthy, why; mesh-sdk go/health), plus a queue summary (counts, oldest age, overdue domains, name-service failures). It asks inside mailu-smtp (env MESH_MAILU_SMTP_CONTAINER), three docker execs in parallel, 10 s each:
    1. postfix status, standing in for the image's own check (! /usr/libexec/postfix/master -t), which this replaces;
    2. postqueue -j, judged by this side's faults, not one dead recipient. Unhealthy when (a) a recipient deferred longer than 30 minutes waits on a local name-service failure (Name service error, Temporary lookup failure, or Host or domain name not found with try again, as in issue 687), or (b) overdue deferred mail reaches 3 or more recipient domains. One or two far domains overdue for other reasons stay healthy and are said in why and queue.overdueDomains, so one dead recipient (deferred up to 5 days) never pages the operator for days;
    3. a lookup of gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com through the resolver postfix is given (python3 getaddrinfo), one line on failure (a SERVFAIL reads gaierror: [Errno -3] Try again).
      Every part is asked even when one fails, so the why names everything wrong at once. A container that cannot be reached or does not answer in 10 s is said in words.
  • The health tool is served even when the admin API is not configured (the admin tools still are not).
  • module.json: the smtp container's health moves from runtime to {kind: tool, tool: mailu_health, interval 60s, timeout 30s, looks 3, grace 120s}, within ADR 0240's bounds (120 s + 3 x 60 s = 5 min). mesh-host's internal/declaration/health.go allows a tool check on a container; a resource carries one check, so the image's own is folded into the tool (step 1).

Tests

modules/mailu/test/mail-flows.test.ts: empty queue healthy; recipient overdue on a name-service failure unhealthy with counts, age and reason; one dead far domain overdue healthy and said; overdue mail to 3 domains unhealthy; younger than the bound healthy; container unreachable unhealthy with what docker said; name not resolving unhealthy; exec timing out said; the tool is served without the admin API. merge-check-typescript.sh for mailu: 10 of 10 pass locally; checks/words passes.

Effect on the operator

mailu's upgrade policy is record: this walk waits for a person's approval. The smtp container's spec loses its runtime check line, so mailu-smtp is recreated (seconds without SMTP delivery; the queue is on its volume and kept). No other container's spec changes. Afterwards, mail that stops flowing because of this side raises mailu's unhealthy condition about 3 minutes after the first message passes 30 minutes deferred.

Acceptance

On novox, novox/mailu.mailu_health answers healthy with the deferred queue is empty (or what is deferred, said), and the node-engine reports the smtp resource healthy by its tool mailu_health; a recipient deferred longer than 30 minutes on a name-service failure here makes it unhealthy with that reason.

Fixes hq issue 690.

by a tool check, mailu_health, asked inside it: postfix runs (the image's
