jschoubben c7039d81e1 Refuse build, rebuild and replay --register by name, naming what replaced them, and delete the hand builds (issue 1851, A11a, ADR 0501 §5) 2026-10-22 19:05:04 +02:00
jschoubben a14dc04b7b Hold the build seat's checks while a delivery builds, and let one check that waited 30 minutes through
ADR 0483: the controller keeps a key per plan in its build phase; holders read it and
take no new check while one is there, but for the oldest check past 30 minutes, one
at a time by a let-through key. The queue says why checks wait.

jschoubben 3d09d5235f issue 974: the checks are queued by pull request on two work-queue streams, taken after a delivery build, dropped when judged, stopped when their key moves; the reordering and the forge-asking end are gone 2026-10-17 14:01:33 +02:00

mesh/delivery delivered
A rebuild that landed while a walk waited for mesh-delivery's word was taken as
the walk's build of that module; once let go, the walk asked a tier only when
every module of it was unasked, so it never asked the rest and stood still.

A walk now takes only the outcomes of builds it asked, and none while it waits;
a rebuild does not join a waiting walk and says it runs beside it; and a tier
asked in part is asked the rest, including a module held built that the walk
never asked for, which is somebody else's build and not sent as the walk's.

A check judges one head; once the pull request has another, its verdict
answers nobody and its run holds a build machine the new head waits
behind. Asking a check of R#N at H now drops every waiting check of R#N
at another head and kills every one in flight, saying each in the log.
Announcements are unordered and a recheck asks a recorded head, so this
happens only when the forge confirms H is the pull request's current
head; otherwise nothing ends and that is said. A one-shot recheck ends
them within the call. Tries, walk builds, group checks, other pull
requests' checks and rechecks of the same head are left alone.

The forge clips a status to 140 characters, so the long sentence pushed the
verdict's own words out; and a paused holder's hand-back or a bus delay also
count as a delivery, so the cause is not claimed (novox/hq issue 594).

A build agent replaced mid-build leaves its ask to be handed out again, and
the second run looked like a first: the queue and the pull request showed
nothing of the 5-8 minutes lost (novox/hq issue 594).

jschoubben 1ded7dff34 Make a queue move lossless and run its passes on the acting controller alone (hq issue 558)
mesh/merge-gate out of date: judged against trunk 4dbd4066ca54, the trunk is now c0c379af2b3c; judged again on a recheck or when it is merged
mesh/repo-check out of date: judged against trunk 4dbd4066ca54, the trunk is now c0c379af2b3c; judged again on a recheck or when it is merged
mesh/delivery superseded: a newer head of the same pull request
Review of #276: a move deleted before it published, so a failed publish
lost an ask; a verb's own process ran a pass beside the serving one, so
one could resume the queue while the other moved asks and a build ran
twice. The copy is now published first and second copies removed by id,
asks only signal the acting controller's loop, moves stop with 5 s of
the pause left, a cancel finds a moved ask by id, and an unreadable ask
keeps its age.

jschoubben c6e234455f Hand a delivery build out before pull-request checks (hq issue 558)
mesh/delivery superseded: a newer head of the same pull request

A merged change's walk waited minutes on its build behind checks in a
first-come queue. The queue now hands deliveries out first, a check that
has waited ten minutes before deliveries asked after it, and says each
ask's kind; the order is kept in the work queue itself.

The queue verb answered only a table, so nothing outside the controller
could say an ask's place in the queue. It now asks its command for JSON:
each ask's state, kind, repository, commit, machine, since and position
among the waiting, with the table carried beside it and answered as the
verb's output, both written from one read. A repository's password, if
one were ever written into it, is left out of what is shown.

jochen cc7fb99f29 Answer a panicking verb with an error, say flag errors in the answer, and leave refused logins out of D15
Read verbs now run in the serving process, where a panic would end every
call; refused logins are nobody's reconnect loop (review of hq issue 327).

jochen 1e04670052 Serve the read verbs on the serving controller's own connection, and name every connection
Each verb ran as a process that dialled the bus, so hundreds of short
connections an hour, all named mesh-controller, hid any client reconnecting
in a loop (hq issue 327). D15 now says a user whose connections keep dropping.

jochen 249d97d1c8 Make pending assignments safe to race, settle them on a tick, and say only what was checked
Review of #150: a withdrawal could land between the look and the act, a
failed ask read as a build in flight, a request kept the wrong asker, a
build being registered read as not built, build "true" could ask a build
nothing waited on, and a status read changed state. Claim a row under the
machine's hold before making it, keep a request only once asked, settle on
the controller's own tick, raise an assignment not made as a condition
until it is answered, and tie each row to its machine.

jochen 9873b3bf13 Keep a replay from moving the mesh backwards, and tighten the queue's edges (review of hq ADR 0219)
A registered replay asked now outranked newer asks of its module, and a plan
took any later outcome as its answer. A replay is now refused while the module
is asked anywhere, a plan module asked under an id is answered by that id
alone, and a rebuild of a commit asks what the module follows. An ask handed
back after a restart no longer reads as dead; a cancel that meets a start is
withdrawn; pause holds for an ask fetched as it lands; kill removes containers
before and after the build ends and says whether its outcome went out; a
holder may say only its own machine is paused.

jochen 106507b1d3 Show and change the build queue through the controller, and have plans follow it (hq ADR 0219)
Nothing showed what waited for a build machine, and an ask could not be
dropped without leaving the plan that made it waiting for ever. New verbs:
queue, cancel, clear, rebuild, replay, kill, pause, resume, and plans retry.
Every ask a person drops is recorded failed through the same take-in as a
failed build; a plan keeps the id it asked each module under and matches
its outcome by it. replay is a dry run unless registered, and registering
an older commit than one registered since needs --older (hq issue 207).
A plan waiting on a seat paused on every holder says so and is not late;
a failed plan can be retried, and a rebuild joins the plan holding the
module instead of running beside it.
