Fixes novox/hq issue 686: a builder cannot run a branch's store tests before its pull request, so they first ran in the merge check, a review round (15-30 min) late.

What existed

Nothing runs the repository check for a pushed ref without a pull request. build --ref builds and registers, replay asks a recorded build again, delivery-check and mesh-delivery.recheck need a pull request and say checked for the forge. The builder's Check already runs a repository's merge-check.sh alone when the ask names no module, so this reuses it whole.

What this adds

A seat verb mesh-controller.try (command try <owner>/<repository> <ref> [--base] [--tests] [--store-only], try --id <id>).

  • It resolves the ref on the forge first; an unknown ref is refused before anything is asked.
  • It asks the build seat for a check marked try in link.CheckRequest: the ref merged into the trunk, the trunk's merge-check.sh, in the toolchain containers with the throwaway store and bus. No module is named, so the merge gate does not run and nothing is built for a merge (ADR 0350's scratch builds stay a pull request's).
  • It counts as a check in the build queue (link.KindOf, issue 558) and is bounded by the check's own bound.
  • Its outcome is never said as checked, so the forge's holder sets no status; nothing is recorded or registered. A check of no pull request and no group echoed by an older build seat is treated the same.
  • The build seat says the outcome as one tried line in the build's log (verdict, time taken, the failing lines picked as issue 460 picks them). try with id reads it, holding its answer up to 20 s (issue 229's bound); no store table, no migration.
  • Only a repository of the mesh is tried: the code the build seat already runs for every pull request.
  • tests and store-only reach the script as MESH_CHECK_TESTS and MESH_CHECK_STORE_ONLY; this repository's merge-check.sh reads both. A pull request's check is handed neither.
  • Declared in internal/catalogue/verbs.go and module.json, with replaces: sh merge-check.sh, docker run postgres (ADR 0245). No grant beyond the seat's.

Tests

Written first, failing on main: cmd/mesh-controller/try_test.go, cmd/mesh-builder/tried_test.go, internal/builder/check_test.go. gofmt, go vet ./... and go test -race ./... pass locally; the store tests skipped there (no store on the desktop) and this adds none.

Not proven here

The live path (forge lookup through gitea.gitea_api, the ask, reading the log) runs only once the controller and the build agent are both delivered. First call after rollout: try this repository's main.

Limits decided here

  • A try runs no merge gate; the pull request's check still does.
  • Reading waits at most 20 s per call; a full run takes minutes, so the caller asks again.
