The test pinned daemon.json to live-restore alone, so every controller check failed once the
docker module gained log rotation as a preference (mesh-catalog #205, #217). It still refuses
dns (ADR 0196) and any key the module does not declare, and checks the log defaults where the
module declares them (novox/hq issue 498).

mesh/delivery superseded: a newer head of the same pull request
A refusal of a send the mesh never recorded went only to stderr; it is now kept
with its sender said to be unknown, and raised. A counter behind the machine (a
store put back) is raised and the condition names push, since the receive loop
must not push. The node's digest and generation are one transaction, and a send
record that fails is said loudly without failing the send. The trigger ignores
an update that changes nothing, and the put-back mark is dropped: a put-back is
composed afresh with the current generation.

jschoubben 313efa826c Say in every declaration the assignment generation it came from, and record every send (hq issue 234)

mesh/repo-check pass: its merge-check.sh passed
mesh/delivery superseded: a newer head of the same pull request
A declaration newer in sequence than every other named four fewer modules
than the assignments held, a machine applied it, and nothing the mesh kept
said who sent it or from what view. The store now raises an assignment
generation in the same transaction as every assignment change (a trigger,
so a cascade counts too); a send reads it before composing, carries it to
engines that said they read it, marks a gate's put-back, and is recorded
with its sequence, sender, generation and modules. The would-send is
stamped with what was last sent, so nothing reads behind for it; a refusal
is kept on the send it refused and raised as S20 naming the sender; plan
says what the machine was last told.

A build wrote .npmrc into its source tree and never removed it, and its clone
recorded the URL's userinfo; a later check's container mounts the workspace as
HOME. The .npmrc and the tree now go when the build ends, clones record their
URL without userinfo, and a check first removes any .npmrc an older builder left.

The toolchain container mounts the workspace as HOME, so the credential kept
there, and a clone's recorded userinfo, were readable by any pull request; its
output is kept on the bus for days. The credential now lives in a private
directory outside the workspace only while cloning, clones record their URL
without userinfo, and every line said to the build's log and the verdict
passes a redactor copied from the journal tool (sharing it: issue 471).

An outcome arriving after its plan failed is kept only in the build records,
so a retry read from the plan alone asked one failed build and the records
then failed the plan again on the next. Settle the tier from the records first.

The store's nightly collection stops the registry for about a minute and a

whole plans. A refusal is now waited for with a growing pause, said in the
build's log, and still fails the build past the bound.

Every grant to call a tool is granted again under the call kind, with the
credential's own bus user as the last token, and every grant to answer one is
granted for calls naming any caller: the caller of a tool call becomes a fact
the bus enforces, as ADR 0259 section 3 made the asker of an ask. A kind of its
own because every existing tool grant is a wildcard that would match any caller
appended. The old tool grants stay for one release so nothing loses its way to a
tool (hq issue 464); the controller's own grants move with that issue, since
they are also the installer's first user list.

A long run's logs pushed the --- FAIL lines out of the last 200 lines the
summary was named from, so a failed check could not say which test failed.
Pick the lines that name a failure as the output streams, keep them whole at
the end of the verdict's report, and say the whole output in the build's log.

A pull request moving the SDK passed its check against the old SDK and then failed
everywhere once it rolled out. In a merge check the test now reads the clone's history
at the tree's own go.mod pin, and holds the captured copy to the clone byte for byte.

The review of #210 found that the fix left the hole open and widened
another.

A command's words were cut on a space alone, while the verb's own
splitter parts them on a space, a tab or a newline. The same line
written with tabs found no space, so all of it was kept — the very hole
this closes. Its words are now parted as the splitter parts them.

And because the command arm sits above the arm that caps a string at
120 bytes, a command kept whole was no longer capped: for a 300-byte
single token the change kept more than the code it replaced. The first
word now carries the same cap.

A one-word command is still kept whole, but the comment no longer
claims it carries nothing to withhold: the record is written before the
verb judges the line, so one word may be a token or compact JSON. The
cap is what bounds that.

The test now says the whole of what is kept for each line, which is
also what proves the rest is gone, and looks for forbidden words as
whole words rather than as substrings — so "set" is back in the list,
and "show" cannot hide in a word such as "shown". All eight cases fail
against the unfixed code.

It is now kept as a mesh-cli line is: its first word, with the rest said
to have been given. A command of one word is kept whole, since there is
nothing after it to withhold, and one that is not a string is kept as
"(given, not kept)".

The record as it stands holds no such line: its whole answer, read at
2026-10-10 22:52 UTC, carries no call of the command verb. That says
nothing of calls older than its window.

jschoubben 0c8c9ffae9 Ask the operator only once the bus holds the controller's grant to ask (hq issue 353)

mesh/repo-check pass: its merge-check.sh passed

The grant is composed from the router's assignment and reaches the bus when its machine is next
pushed. Between assign and push the record said a router was here and the bus refused every ask
(seven refusals on 2026-10-09, 17:54 to 17:56). The asker now judges, as a push does, whether the
bus's machine was last sent the user list composed now; while it was not, nothing is published, it
is said once, and the conditions that need the operator are raised as undelivered, naming the push
that carries the grant.

mesh/repo-check pass: its merge-check.sh passed
mesh/delivery delivered
On 2026-10-09 a release's gate on the control node read the machine's
report against a newer send another plan had just made there, failed
three builds the machine had reported healthy, and put them back on
every machine to a controller older than the store's schema; that
controller then passed the newer plan's gate from its own health.

- A gate keeps what its send carried (digest, sequence) and reads the
report against it; a report on the last send is on it too.
- A gate judges only the build the machine was last sent: another build
there supersedes the judging — no verdict, nothing put back.
- A controller is told its build (MESH_CONTROLLER_VERSION, ${version}
  in a process's env) and records how far it reads the store's schema;
a put-back to a build that reaches less, or never said, is refused
and the current build kept, said as urgent.
- A release's open gate holds other sends of its modules there, and a
plan's own first send waits on it.

mesh/delivery superseded: a newer head of the same pull request
A secret given at the controller's terminal through mesh-cli (secret accept … --from -) never reached the
line: every line ran with no standard input. A line that runs as the terminal now reads what mesh-cli
carried (at most 64 KiB); an ordinary call carrying any is refused and nothing runs; the calls record keeps
only that some was given, the journal and the answer nothing of it.

The terminal path's order is one function, keepGiven, so the test fails when the announcement before a

jschoubben 3e5086a2f6 give: never take a trusted party's secret at a desk, and announce it before it is kept (hq ADR 0259 §10, the confirmation review's N1-give)
A desk's prompt is answered over the desk machine's bus, on a subject that machine's runtime answers;
on a desk machine agents run as the operator, who holds that credential, so an agent could answer first
with a bot token of its own sealed to the call's key. The secret of a module running as an account of
its own (the Telegram bot's token) is now refused at the desk, before anybody is asked, naming the line
to type at the controller's terminal; there it is announced on every channel, the old one among them,
before it is kept, and not kept when that announcement fails. What is typed at the terminal is not
echoed. Tests: the refusal with nobody asked, and only the desk machine's launcher may answer its
prompt (MaySubscribe).

jschoubben ed331eb972 Let the give verb's exact line past the terminal rule for secrets, and nothing else (hq ADR 0259 §10, ADR 0266)
Restacked on #157, which carries #164's rule that no verb runs secret accept. give's line carries no value:
the operator types it into the desk's hidden prompt, sealed to the call and then to the module's machine.
Only that exact line passes: a value, a file, a provider or any extra word stays the terminal's.

jschoubben be59f29f46 give: take only a value a person holds, ask the desk by name, let the controller alone ask it, and announce every value given
The review of 2026-10-09 (M4):
- give refuses broker (the bus account issue mints) and any own secret the mesh may make itself;
- the desk's prompt is asked by module, secret and machine, never with words of the caller's, and the
bus denies the prompt's subjects to every principal but the controller, however wide its grant, so the
  prompt's 'the controller asks' is the bus's word (Permissions.PublishDeny, broker.ControllerOnly);
- secret accept with a value is refused through a verb: a value comes from the terminal or the desk;
- every value given for an own secret, at the terminal or the desk, raises the urgent condition
secret-given on every channel, until the operator silences it.

jschoubben 74d35600a6 Keep an approval asked through a silence of its condition (hq ADR 0259, the confirmation review's M1)
Choosing Silence silenced the condition, the condition was no longer wanted, and the next reconcile
cancelled the Restart or Release ask beside it: an acknowledgement, which any desk click may give,
took an approval back. An open approval ask now stays until it is answered or expires while its
condition is open and silenced with the same answers. The test silences as the controller does; it
failed before (0 open) and passes, and the kept Restart is performed on its warrant.

jschoubben d19c9ed5b7 Start a rehearsal only at the controller's terminal as main now judges it (hq ADR 0259, ADR 0272)
rehearse refused only a verb's process. Since mesh-cli (ADR 0272 §4) the serving controller runs an
ordinary mesh-cli line without a verb, naming its caller: such a line, from an agent's account, read as
the terminal and could start a question the operator did not ask. rehearse now asks
startedAtTheTerminal. And main's mesh-cli test helper asked is cliAsked, beside the asker's asked.
2026-10-09 16:22:34 +02:00
jschoubben 799eec0a5a Ask an acknowledgement apart from an approval, change every kept ask by compare-and-set, and rehearse rather than drill (hq ADR 0259, review M1/L2/L3/L7)
- M1: a condition offering both kinds of answer is asked twice: its authorising answers about the
condition, its acknowledging ones (Silence) apart, so an answer from a channel that only acknowledges
  never ends an approval.
- L2: the asked store creates once and changes only over the revision it read, deciding again on what it
reads; a stale cancel no longer writes over an act.
- L3: every ask is kept before it is published, one whose publishing failed is marked unsent and asked
again, and a cancel is kept before it is said. The terminal's test question is now `rehearse`, so it is
not called what the glossary calls a drill; its two answers are both approve-level.
- L7: two deliveries of one warrant to two controllers at once act exactly once, on a real bus.
- Re-vendored onto mesh-sdk 76902998 (canonical digests): an option binds an asks.Act with each argument
  as arg.<name>.
- The lab's bus fixture composes verified-sender only where the lab says its machine is root-free
  (MESH_LAB_ASKS_ROOT_FREE=true).

jschoubben ad406e81b8 Say loudly when a condition that needs the operator could not be asked on any channel (hq ADR 0259)
With no router, or an ask the router refused and nothing changed since, the controller asked nothing
and said it only in its own log. It now keeps a condition of its own, asks-undelivered, naming the
conditions not asked and why, cleared once each can be asked again.

jschoubben 646c5e53db Add drill: an ask the operator starts at the controller's terminal, whose approval performs nothing and is recorded (hq ADR 0259)
The live acceptance needs an approval the operator can ask for at will and that changes nothing. A
drill is asked like any condition's ask, bound to its own act, claimed once on its warrant and recorded
as a warrant hand-act with who answered, through which channel and the proofs. A verb's process may not
start one, so no agent asks the operator a question they did not start.

jschoubben 2190e2c664 Compose and raise the bus of the lab's proof of the operator's answers, as this controller would (hq ADR 0259)
mesh-lab's asks proof runs the router, the Telegram channel and an asker on a real bus. Its accounts,
streams, workers, buckets and memberships come from this test at the controller's commit, so the lab
proves the composition and not a copy of it. Skipped unless the lab asks.

(the SDK's Option.Binds). A warrant must name the digest of the ask the controller keeps, and before
acting the controller checks that the act it is about to perform is the one the option bound: a
record changed after the ask is refused, never performed. mesh-sdk moves to d4077b4.

forge's security fix (a082615b) was superseded by 8ff8197a. A plan now

jschoubben 077ddf0eb8 Judge a send by when a fault began, not when it was last raised (hq issue 348)
On 2026-10-09 the control node's resolver refused from 10:57:57 UTC. A
node-engine restarted by the 10:59:34 send said its names undecided, that
statement cleared the network condition, the next look raised it again
after the send, and the gate put back two builds for a fault older than
them.

- A condition keeps First across a reopening; the gate reads Began.
- An undecided network statement (unknown, starting) clears nothing.
- D10 counts what a release's tier names as rolling, so a walked
node-engine is not core-behind on its own first machine.
- D2 raises a resolver that refuses every try at once: a refusal is an
answer, not a loaded resolver (issue 277).

The confirmation review of 2026-10-09 found D-root and DA writing one key, machine.<m>.agent-root, from

jschoubben 5866b2db94 Hold a private kind's holder to an account of its own, as a verified one is (hq ADR 0259 §7, §8)
A private kind is where the router shows a link's code, and the code makes an account the operator's.

jschoubben 983bf65141 Answer the controller's own verbs, root-free among them, from the serving controller alone (hq ADR 0259 §8)
The confirmation review asked who may answer root-free on the bus. Composed from the controller's own
manifest, the module principal of the machine running the controller and that machine's runtime were
granted the controller seat's tool subjects too: either could answer root-free, and the runtime's
credential is one an agent on that machine may hold. The controller's seat is now served by the
controller principal alone, in grants and memberships; TestOnlyTheServingControllerMayAnswerRootFree
failed before (3 answerers) and passes. And a machine waiting for its first setuid search is not
root-free, whatever ADR 0266's quiet window does to the self-check.

jschoubben 0e46b8302d Let root-free take its machines as a list, as the router names them

jschoubben 4c375dafed Judge a machine root-free only on a positive, fresh measure, and believe a verified sender only there (hq ADR 0259 §8, review H2/H3)
The agent-root probe read the sudo module's answer, given in the machine's runtime as the very account
an agent could become, and took a missing account, a missing answer or no accounts as a pass. One
judgement now decides: the machine names an agent account its node-engine judged unable to become
root within 15 minutes (agentConfined, mesh-controller #164), and the login shell's execute is not
served there; anything not read is not free. The probe raises agent-root on it, the new root-free
verb answers it live for the router, and a push composes verified-sender for a kind only while its
machine and the router's pass it.

The control-node withholds execute through its holder's setting since ADR 0268, so probe D-root read a
closed path as open. It now counts the verb as served while the holder's setting for that machine is
serve, or the bus hears execute answered there, or the bus could not be asked: a withheld value not yet
pushed, or a holder answering against its setting, is never taken for closed.

hub's tunnel and the bus at its holder's address on the private network,
and enrolment refuses any other key (novox/hq ADR 0169). The bus is no
longer public, so a machine outside the mesh can join only this way; a

An image is not byte-reproducible, so ADR 0236's 'same artifacts is no move'

and every send to the control node waited for a planned bus upgrade.

The builder now records a source fingerprint per build (module tree, context
trees, bases and toolchains by digest). A rebuild with the fingerprint of the
build it repeats is registered with that build's artifacts, handed to modules
standing on it, holds no push, demands no bus step, and a plan sends and
gates nothing for it. Identical artifacts remain a second way to be no move.

jschoubben 74b0dab34c A container publishes only a port its module declares (hq issue 227)
The short form is a question the mesh answers: "80" means publish what the

assigned. It can only assign one for a port the module declared, so a number
appearing nowhere in listens gets no assignment and reaches the machine as
written — which is how the photo module asked for port 80 on the node whose
reverse proxy holds it.

Four modules publish 80 quite safely, because they declare 80. The difference
is the declaration, not the number. A catalogue-wide test now says so; it
names all three offenders against the catalogue as it was.

jschoubben 41b20b2782 A grant secret belongs to whoever provisions, and the sweep skips what it will not address
Issue 225. The mesh seals one credential per consumer beside the provider's
contributions file, and wrote it root-owned. That was right while a module's
own code ran in a container as root; ADR 0198 moved that code under the node's
runtime, as the node's account, and the secret stayed root's. On the control
machine two consumers went unprovisioned for three hours and the only sign
was a line reading 'secret not readable yet', 4330 times.

The same sentence is already written for a module's own secrets a few hundred
lines above — 'a root-owned 0600 file is one that process cannot read'. This
is that rule reaching the other kind of secret the mesh writes for a module.

Issue 226. The sweep met a reference recorded with the store's old address,
read 'I will not address this' as 'the store refuses everything', and
collected none of the 1681 it had found. Two changes: references from build
records are read through Recorded, where the provenance is known — not in
LetGo, which cannot tell one registry host from another and must stay strict
— and a reference the sweep will not address is now ErrNotOurs, skipped,
never a reason to stop. Only the store refusing ends a sweep.

make check: the two failures both fail on main as well — the resolver test
(hq 202/203) and the service-manager test, which reads this machine's own
shell environment.

jschoubben 1363a2fe27 while-stopped names the container as the machine knows it (hq ADR 0189)
A module names its own resources locally; a declaration names them under the
module. restart-on and reload-on are rewritten for exactly that reason and
while-stopped was not, so the store's step said it held "store" still while
the machine's container is "distribution.store".

The host refuses a declaration naming a container it does not have — whole.
So novox took nothing at all, on every push, from 04:15 until this. The
machine was never damaged: refusing whole is what kept it serving.

Both sides' tests passed throughout. The controller's read manifests, the
host's read hand-written declarations with bare ids, and nothing composed one
and judged the result. That test now exists.

jschoubben b9ad7a2948 Review before merge: refuse a silent disagreement, and bound the sweep
Three things found reading this back, each of which would have been quiet.

A consumer that keeps several holders of one provision (ADR 0094) gets a
login per holder, and a provider derives from the login — so it would make a
resource per holder while the consumer is told one value for the requirement.
That is issue 124's own failure one case to the side: authenticate, then be
refused on every object. Refused now, naming both ends.

The sweep runs inside somebody's build and was unbounded. At most two hundred
artifacts and sixty seconds, stopping at the first refusal because a store
that refuses one refuses all; the rest is offered again next build.

The citation and migration renumbers are in the commit before this one.

jschoubben 79993fb498 Rebased onto main: ADR 0188 renumbered to 0201, migration 0055 to 0056
The bundles refactor took ADR 0188 on main, so this work's record is 0201 and
every comment citing it moves with it. Main also took migration 0055 (an
older build never replaces a newer), so the store's collected-artifacts table
is 0056 — a number two migrations share is a schema nobody can trust.

which fails on main too and now for two stacked reasons (hq issues 203 and 202).

jschoubben c7884f5a72 The store keeps what the records name (hq ADR 0189)
The mesh names what may go from its own build records — a digest it did not
record making is never named, which is what keeps the sweep away from the
images genesis pushed. An artifact stays because a definition the mesh holds
names it, or because it belongs to one of the five most recent successful
builds of its module.

internal/artifacts asks the store to let go of one; internal/inventory
decides and remembers (migration 0055); the sweep runs after a build the mesh
recorded, which is when both the bytes and the keep set moved. Never fatal to
a build.

And the manifest side of while-stopped, refused from the definition alone:
no schedule, run-once, a container the module does not declare, itself.

jschoubben 580c4d66a7 A served value may name the consumer it is served to (hq ADR 0188)
${consumer:as} and ${consumer:as:dns} in a serves block are filled per
consumer at resolution, and the one filled value reaches both ends: the
consumer's binding and its ${bound:...} substitutions, and the provider's
contributions entry as `derived`. A fact or alphabet the mesh does not have
is refused at parse; a consumer whose own file already holds the derived
value is refused at resolution, naming the placeholder to write instead.

jschoubben 11e4bc0ba1 The roster is the machines: each node's internal domain covers its routes (hq ADR 0191)
The roster published routed names — public ones first, then (in this PR's first take) internal ones
told apart by suffix. Neither is needed: a node has one internal domain and every route on it is a
name under it, answered by the resolver's per-node wildcard; a node's public domains are public
DNS's. routeNamesInTheMesh and NamesServed are removed, and a test pins .Names to the machines.

jschoubben e56f3aa1cb The roster publishes a route's internal name, never its public one (hq ADR 0191)
NamesServed read a route's public `name` and plan.go then filtered by suffix — telling the mesh's
names from public ones by their spelling, when the mesh composed both itself. It now publishes the
`internal-name` it composed under the serving node (ADR 0151); the suffix filter is gone.

jschoubben 408f6dbad9 The mesh answers only its own names privately; a public name resolves publicly (hq ADR 0191)
Every routed public name was published into each machine's hosts region at its serving node's
private address. ace's resolver also answers its LAN, so a phone there got the control-node's
tunnel address for the mail server and could not connect. Routes have internal names under the
serving node (ADR 0151), so only names under the mesh suffix are published now.

fail2ban restarts when the composed jail file changes, and each filter is
a file of its own, so a module that changed only its failregex left the

digest.

jschoubben 7d82751862 The bus is never public: the broker port is no longer a foundation opening
The controller widened the bus's from-mesh port to from-anywhere on the
broker's host so a machine could enrol before it had a tunnel. ADR 0169
has machines join through the tunnel and decides the bus is never public;
every live bus connection already comes from the mesh.

One verb in the row that this binary cannot run aborted the start, and a stale push that put an
older control plane back took the whole mesh off the bus for ten minutes — recoverable only by a
person running the binary outside its service, because the push that repairs it is one of the verbs
that had stopped being served. Now the verbs it knows are served, the ones it does not answer the
reason, and the start names them once.

jschoubben 99c4c4ef04 A jail's pattern names <HOST> once, and is refused by name when it does not (hq ADR 0179)
fail2ban expands <HOST> into a named capture group, so a pattern naming it twice is a duplicate
group name: the daemon refuses its whole configuration and exits, and the machine keeps no bans at
all — for every jail, not the one at fault. Hit live on the control node the day the jails shipped.
A jail with no name, no pattern, or a name another of the module's jails took is refused too.

jschoubben bd58d1c3ef The intrusion-prevention seat serves status, banned, ban and unban; the proxy logs a refused name (hq ADR 0179)
Every holder of node-intrusion-prevention owes the four verbs, as the packet filter's holder owes
its three (ADR 0170). The proxy says in its log when a name this mesh does not serve is asked for,
with the asking address last, so its own jail can read it.
